He spent his childhood in Boston, Massachusetts and studied art a the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston from 1934-1938. He served in the US Navy in the Pacific during World War II and saw combat. In 1951 he opened his first gallery in Jackson, New Hampshire. He painted in oils, watercolors, pastels, pencil, ink, and markers. His styles varied from impressionism to abstraction. He invented his own technique called 'vitreous flux' in 1961.
