In 1942 she began a lifelong friendship with Hungarian painter Jean-Georges Simon, who opened her eyes to European abstraction. She was instrumental in forming the Midland Group in the late 1940s - a regionally influential collective of Modernist painters based in Nottingham with links to the St. Ives group, and Wilhemina Barns-Graham.
