She was part of the Danish surrealists and had a close friendship with Rita Kernn-Larsen. Thoresen participated in international exhibitions, such as the Surrealism Exhibition in Paris in 1938. After divorcing Vilhelm Bjerke Petersen in 1953, she moved to the United States with her two children.
