The Florentine sculptor Emilio Santarelli, who lived from 1801 to 1886, received a stipend to study under Bertel Thorvaldson in Rome in 1824. He returned to work in Florence where, amongst other commissions, completed a statue of Michelangelo for the Uffizi in 1840.
