Emmanuel Michel Benner was born on July 17, 1873 in Capri. He is the son of the painter Jean Benner and the nephew of Emmanuel Benner, his father's twin brother. A pupil of Jean-Jacques Henner, Jules Lefebvre, Benjamin-Constant and Tony Robert-Fleury, he entered the Beaux Arts de Paris at the age of sixteen and was awarded the Second Grand Prix de Rome.
