This genre had been popular from the late 17th century, and was especially developed to the great heights of Dutch painting. It's out in Europe, but this genre had many performers here in Norway, where Bøe was one of very few. Frants Bøe entered the still life painting already when he began his education in Copenhagen in 1840. As stated in Nkl:. He sold many paintings to the art associations in Norway, essentially with motifs of flowers, fruits and conchs, occasionally also of animals.
