The painter, Franz Skarbina was born in Berlin in 1849. From 1865 to 1869, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, followed by several study trips before he attained a position as an assistant teacher at the Academy. In 1888, he was finally appointed a full professor. Together with Max Liebermann and Walter Leistikov he founded the artists' group 'Gruppe der XI' in 1892. From 1865 to 1869, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, followed by several study trips before he attained a position as an assistant teacher at the Academy. In 1888, he was finally appointed a full professor. Together with Max Liebermann and Walter Leistikov he founded the artists' group 'Gruppe der XI' in 1892. Their organization of a Munch exhibition created quite a scandal at the time. Skarbina was also co-founder of the Berlin Secession in 1898.
