In the summer of 1808, several students of the Vienna Art Academy gathered together. Unconvinced by the prevailing school of thought, they searched for their own motifs and forms of expression. They were influenced by the romantic view of the Middle Ages, developing in poetry at that time. The young artists held weekly meetings.
