Fred Zeller was born into a privileged family in France and started painting at the age of 15. He studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and was active in the socialist and Trotskyist movements in France before and after WWII. By 1948, Zeller was devoting most of his time to painting and gained a following for his surrealist paintings. He continued to be active in the Socialist Party for the rest of his life.
