He worked with Anton Raphael Mengs from 1777-79 and was possibly a close friend of Jacques-Louis David during that time. He returned to Rome in 1783, which was the most successful period of his career. However, he was forced to return to Berlin in 1805 due to political conditions. The attribution of one of his drawings was confirmed by Prof. Börsch-Supan.
