After his return in 1871 he was in Munich in the close circle of Friedrich August von Kaulbach and Wilhelm Busch. Numerous landscape sketches that he brought with him from trips to Africa in 1873 and 1876/79 form the templates for African landscape paintings that he created in Berlin and Marburg, the strength of which lies in the lighting effects. Fritz Klingelhofer passed away in 1903.
