Garrett Dorsey Braisted (1819-1881) made his living as a spar maker before going into the oyster business in the 1850s. Probably located on the east bank of the Hudson River in upper Manhattan, his land was valued at $6,000 according to the 1860 Federal Census. At one time the lower Hudson had 350 square miles of oyster beds and it was estimated that New York harbor contained half of the world's oysters, giving rise to New York City's title, The Big Oyster.
