Concurrent with this participation in his father's office, however, was the younger Hobbs's continuing interest in painting. During the 1870s he studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and in 1887 he retired from the profession of architect in favor of that of painter, according to an announcement which appeared in the 16 May 1887 Philadelphia Real Estate Record and Builders Guide.
