Gerhard Graf was born in 1883 in Berlin as the son of the court photographer Heinrich Graf. After his studies he established himself in Berlin and was a teacher at the Grunewald grammar school. But he was drawn from the city to draw in nature. In 1925 he built a cottage by the Plessower Lake in Werder at the Havel River. In 1932 he added an art studio.
