Marseille born artist Germain Fabius Brest, similarly to Eugène Delacroix and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, spent time under the influence of artist Emile Loubon. Loubon, due to his own experiences in Palestine, encouraged Brest to visit the Middle East.
