Gustave Adelswärd was born in Lyon, France in 1843. He was the son of Amelie (nee Steiner), and Baron Renauld Oscar Adelswärd, a captain in the French General Staff, later the head of the National Guard in Nancy, and a member of the French National Assembly. Surprisingly, Gustave chose an artistic path rather than follow his family with a career in politics or the military, befitting the upper stratum of society into which he had been born. He was the son of Amelie (nee Steiner), and Baron Renauld Oscar Adelswärd, a captain in the French General Staff, later the head of the National Guard in Nancy, and a member of the French National Assembly. Surprisingly, Gustave chose an artistic path rather than follow his family with a career in politics or the military, befitting the upper stratum of society into which he had been born. Gustave studied under Léon Bonnat in Paris, eventually becoming a successful, respected artist. His works featured the French landscape as well as scenes from Italy and southern Germany. Surprisingly, Gustave chose an artistic path rather than follow his family with a career in politics or the military, befitting the upper stratum of society into which he had been born. Gustave studied under Léon Bonnat in Paris, eventually becoming a successful, respected artist. His works featured the French landscape as well as scenes from Italy and southern Germany.
