Gustav Freiherr von Bechtolsheim, actually Gustav Adam Freiherr von Mauchenheim, was born in Regensburg in 1842. From 1871 on Bechtolsheim studied at the Munich Academy, where he was a student of the historical painter Karl Theodor Piloty. From 1871 on Bechtolsheim studied at the Munich Academy, where he was a student of the historical painter Karl Theodor Piloty. Thereafter he devoted himself to landscape painting and was influenced by Adolf Lier. His atmospheric plein-air landscapes were painted initially smooth and from the turn of the century on in pastose and lively manner depicting mainly motifs from southern Germany and especially Upper Bavaria. Gustav Freiherr von Bechtolsheim died in 1924.
