He soon had to decide between a career as a painter or as an opera singer. He chose the latter. After a successful stage career and tours throughout Europe, he fully turned to the painting in the 1880s. He soon had to decide between a career as a painter or as an opera singer. He chose the latter. After a successful stage career and tours throughout Europe, he fully turned to the painting in the 1880s. He studied under Hermann Eschke (1823-1900) in Berlin, and later under the Norwegian painter Hans Frederick Gude (1825-1903). In 1912 Schleich died in Berlin.
