Between 1883 and 1888 he attended the School of Applied Art and the Royal Academy in Amsterdam where he studied drawing, painting, watercolor painting but was also etching and lithography. He lived in Amsterdam and later briefly in Bussum until 1900. After his studies, he started working as a teacher at the School of Applied Arts in Haarlem. A number of his students like A. W. Short, Ina van Heck and Charles Beck would also later become well known artists. During these years he lived in Amsterdam in Watergraafsmeer.
