Ian Mac Innes was a painter, teacher, and political cartoonist from Stromness, Orkney Isles. He attended Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen and was a member of the 47 Group. Mac Innes was known for his landscape and people paintings of Orkney and was a close friend of George Mackay Brown. He illustrated many of Brown's books and dust covers. After retiring as Headmaster of Stromness Academy, he continued painting and was preparing for another exhibition in Edinburgh when he suffered a stroke in... Read full biography
Ian Mac Innes was a painter, teacher, and political cartoonist from Stromness, Orkney Isles. He attended Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen and was a member of the 47 Group. Mac Innes was known for his landscape and people paintings of Orkney and was a close friend of George Mackay Brown. He illustrated many of Brown's books and dust covers. After retiring as Headmaster of Stromness Academy, he continued painting and was preparing for another exhibition in Edinburgh when he suffered a stroke in 1997. He ultimately died from complications related to the stroke. His paintings can be found in Scottish Public Collections and have sold at auction for prices ranging from £650 to £900.
