In 1928, he went to Egypt to study under the painter Naroni. In 1931-1934, he continued his studies at Ecole Superieure de la Ville, Paris. From 1940, Amitai showed his work at group exhibitions of the Artists Association. He was one of the founders of the Artists' Colony in Safed, where he lived and worked most of the year.
