Barnett began his art career as a landscape painter in 1965. When he began college at The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, he started experimenting with abstraction, making collages. These works incorporated the juxtaposition of unrelated images and the use of different scales. He bounced back and forth for some time between those two subjects, landscape/figurative and abstraction.
