A native of Antwerp, where he was active all his life, Jacob Grimmer's reputation had spread across the Alps as early as 1550, when he was acclaimed by Vasari as one of the best landscape painters of his day. This praise was later echoed by Karel van Mander who claimed not to know another artist more 'outstandingly skilled in landscapes'. This praise was later echoed by Karel van Mander who claimed not to know another artist more 'outstandingly skilled in landscapes'. Along with his contemporary Pieter Brueghel the Elder, Grimmer was one of the first painters to depart from the tradition of landscape painting pioneered by Joachim Patinir, in the first half of the 15th century, in favor of more faithful renditions of the Flemish scenery.
