Born in Amsterdam, Jacob Esselens was a highly successful silk and velvet merchant as well as an artist known for his landscape paintings, such as Beach view now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. SK-A-2250). His business affairs prompted to him to travel extensively, and he is documented in England, Scotland, France and Italy. Born in Amsterdam, Jacob Esselens was a highly successful silk and velvet merchant as well as an artist known for his landscape paintings, such as Beach view now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. SK-A-2250). His business affairs prompted to him to travel extensively, and he is documented in England, Scotland, France and Italy. Within the Netherlands, he visited Arnhem, Rhenen and Kleef, traveling to the latter in 1663 with fellow artists Gerbrandt van den Eeeckhout and Jan Lievens. Versatile and highly talented, Esselens was also a prolific draftsman and produced elegant portraits.
