James Scouler was born in Edinburgh, the son of an organ builder. He showed talent for drawing at a young age and won a prize for drawing from the 'Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce' around the age of 15. He pursued a career in art, attending drawing classes at the St. Martin's Lane 'Academy' in London run by William Hogarth and studying classical sculpture at the Duke of Richmond's Gallery. His work is reminiscent of John Smart.
