Weenix apprenticed with his father and initially also created depictions of the Roman Campagna and harbor motifs with figural scenes. Eventually, however, he devoted himself to painting hunting still lifes. A popular motif was dead game, often with hunters and dogs in front of a scenic background. In 1697 Weenix created a portrait of Czar Peter the Great. In addition, he received an order from a Spanish merchant for five large-scale oil paintings of a house in Amsterdam.
