Jean Mantel studied painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1936, he obtained the prize of the National Society of Fine Arts which allowed him to stay a year in Morocco. He moved to Rabat in a workshop made available to the laureates in the Kasbah of the Oudayas and worked in Meknes with Mattéo Brondy (1866-1944). He moved to Rabat in a workshop made available to the laureates in the Kasbah of the Oudayas and worked in Meknes with Mattéo Brondy (1866-1944). Returning to his hometown in 1937, he presented his work and applied for a position as a drawing teacher in Morocco which he obtained in Rabat at the colleges of Orange trees. Forced to return to France during the Second World War, he hastened to return to Morocco in 1946 and was appointed professor in Rabat at the Lycée Gouraud.
