Read full biography Johannes van Bronchorst lived from 1627 to 1656. He trained in Utrecht where he was a pupil of the noted Caravaggesque painter Gerrit van Honthorst. Like his master before him, he made a formative journey to Italy, where he was active in Rome from 1648 to 1650. There he knew the Dutch poet Reyer Anslo and is also recorded as a member of the ‘Bentvueghels’, a Bacchic brotherhood of Netherlandish painters in Rome which included several fellow Caravaggisti.
