John attended the Laguna Beach School of Art and the California Institute for the Arts on a Walt Disney Studios scholarship. He worked briefly as an animation cartoonist in California and then went to British Columbia where he painted wild animals with Robert Lougheed. There he met Terri Kelly, his wife and well-known artist, and they settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In 1994, he was elected to membership in the Cowboy Artists of America.
