José Pineda was a shipwright and watercolourist from Spain, born to a family with a background in sailing. He settled in Barcelona around 1871 and specialized in painting portraits of ships, particularly Catalan sailing ships, in watercolour. His paintings were often commissioned by shipping companies for their offices. He settled in Barcelona around 1871 and specialized in painting portraits of ships, particularly Catalan sailing ships, in watercolour. His paintings were often commissioned by shipping companies for their offices. Pineda also practiced naval modelling and was awarded a diploma and bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition in Barcelona in 1888 for his frigate "Hijas de Pineda". He is represented in the Maritime Museum and Nautical School of Barcelona, the Planas Collection in the Balearic Islands, and various private collections.
