In 1897, he co-founded a painting school for women in Lviv. Makarewicz painted genre scenes, particularly from the life of the Hutsuls, and practiced monumental painting. He worked on various projects including polychromes in churches in different cities. Additionally, he designed stained glass windows, created illustrations, and restored artworks. He occasionally explored landscape painting.
