He studied from 1910 for a short time with a scholarship from the Hessian Grand Duke at the painting school of Adolf Beyer, but artistically he was largely self-taught. In 1912 Karl moved to Munich, then in 1914 he had a study stay in Paris, then in Darmstadt. In 1919 he was a founding member of the Darmstadt Secession,before moving to Munich in 1937.
