Richter was a traveler who loved to spend long periods in the Amazon jungle and in the Sierra de la Macarena in Colombia. After fighting in the Second World War and having been a teacher in a German school, Richter decided to travel to Brazil in the mid-30s, to later arrive in Colombia, where he would fall in love with nature and its inhabitants. For a time he worked as an entomologist at the Institute of Natural Sciences of the National University of Colombia.
