He began his artistic studies in 1907 at the Academy of Decorative and Fine Arts in Nuremberg and continued in Berlin. He traveled a lot, looking for new motives and inspirations. He painted landscapes from Europe, Istanbul (where he stayed from 1911 to 15), Jerusalem, Persia, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Mongolia; he was in the Caucasus and Tibet.
