Marie Berton-Maire was a French painter, sculptor and draughtswoman born in Roubaix in 1894. Trained at the Lille School of Fine Arts, she was a pupil of Ferdinand Humbert, Suzanne Minier and Pharaon de Winter. She was awarded several prizes, including the gold medal at the Salon des artistes français in 1942. The artist traveled in North Africa from 1927 to 1937, bringing back numerous landscapes, as well as portraits of women, whose subjects are rarer and more intimate.
