A painter of southern landscapes with fishermen, shanties, swamps and moss-laden trees, Marshall Smith Jr. was also the founder of the Southern Art Union (1880). He was born in Norfolk, Virginia and was active in New Orleans from 1870 to 1906. He arrived there as a child and took his first art lessons from Adolphe Jacquet in 1866. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia and was active in New Orleans from 1870 to 1906. He arrived there as a child and took his first art lessons from Adolphe Jacquet in 1866. In 1870, he became a pupil of Richard Clague, the city's foremost landscape painter, and it was Clague who is credited as the greatest influence on Smith. He also studied with Theodore Sidney Moise. In 1874, Smith left New Orleans to study in Rome and Munich and to tour Italy, England, and France.
