Max Schwimmer was born in 1895 in Leipzig. He became a German painter, graphic artist and illustrator. Artistically largely self-taught, Schwimmer initially studied at the Leipzig-Connewitz teacher training college and temporarily in school service in Obersaida and Marienberg in the Ore Mountains and in Lützschena near Leipzig. He was also a soldier in World War I, and from 1920-23 studied art history and philosophy at the University of Leipzig.
