That commission led to an art scholarship at the University of Little Rock. He also studied at the Art Students League in New York and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He settled in Chicago and was married in 1955. He worked as a mail sorter through the 1960s in the downtown Chicago post office, which is where he met Bill Walker.
