Born in Padang Panjang, Indonesia, Mochtar Apin was a painter, print maker and graphic artist, a member of the Bandung School and a founding member of the progressive art movement Gelanggang Seniman Muda (Arena of Independant Artists) in Jakarta in 1946, promoting modernity and freedom in art and culture. He is regularly represented at international auctions.
