A poet, collector, and bibliophile, Jin Nong, known as one of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, specialized in painting plum blossoms. Jin Nong painted mostly in monochrome and rendered few in color. He also developed a distinctive style of calligraphy through the study of the squat clerical-script form of ancient stele writing, creating eccentric shapes which combined with graphic quality of the tight interlocking lacy blossoms animated the composition with interesting visual effect.
