Paul Emile Léon Perboyre was a battle painter born in Horbourg near Colmar, France, into a military family. He studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris and was a pupil of Léon Bonnat and Edouard Detaille. Perboyre became one of the most famous military painters of his time, making his debut at the 1881 Salon and exhibiting regularly until 1926. He was a member of the Artistes Français and received an honorable mention in 1908.
