The painter and draftsman Philipp Röth was born in 1841 in Darmstadt and began his studies there as pupil of August Lucas and Paul Weber. He eventually completed his studies under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer at the Art Academy in Karlsruhe. During a period as freelance artist in Dusseldorf from 1864 to 1870, he was under the influence of the Düsseldorf School of painting. He eventually completed his studies under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer at the Art Academy in Karlsruhe. During a period as freelance artist in Dusseldorf from 1864 to 1870, he was under the influence of the Düsseldorf School of painting. Röth is considered as one of the most important representatives of Paysage intime in Germany. In his late work, the artist turned to Impressionism.
