It is therefore no surprise that a substantial part of his output features miniatures portraying naval officers. Jean's important 1801 commission portraying, Admiral James Saumarez, 1st Baron de Saumarez (1757-1836) is held by the National Portrait Gallery, London (inv.no. NPG 2549).
