Quan Shen, also known as Shen Nanpin and nicknamed Hengzhai, was born in 1682. He was a popular painter specializing in birds, animals and flowers and he painted countless cranes in his life, especially for birthdays. Shen was influenced by Bian Ji and Lu Jingzhao. His realistic style works exerted a profound influence on Japan mainly in the Edo period, a country he traveled and remained for three years with students as famous as Masataka o Kumashiro Yuhi.
