Saraochim Salim was born in Medan, North Sumatra, on 3 September 1908. In 1919 he went to the Netherlands, then in 1928 to Paris, France. There he met Fernand Leger whom he studied painting with and continued to study at the Académie de la Grande Chaumiére from 1929 to 1932. He is an amazing artist who has maintained his social beliefs and ideals throughout his long life, for the belives that artists will never die.
