Trained within the family, Quaglio embarked on a career as a theatre painter and took over the position of court theatre painter in Munich from relatives in 1815, becoming director of decoration in 1828. Quaglio was one of the leading, innovative and one of the most prolific theatre decorators of his time, his designs were also adopted in other cities. In addition, he created very finely and colouristically atmospheric painted late romantic views, especially of churches.
