Stirling Gillespie, also known as James Gillespie Jnr, was brought up in a world of cinema, with his father being a missionary and silent film commentator. He started his career in journalism before joining Elder Dalrymple Productions, where he became involved in making films. Gillespie undertook expeditions to make educational films and recorded his experiences in a book titled "Celluloid Safari." After the Second World War, he pursued a successful career as a watercolour landscape painter.
