Theodor Rocholl was one of the most productive and successful military painters of the late 19th century. He participated in several wars as a war artist, among others in Turkey and China. His often dramatic compositions were carried out in a sketchy, pastose style revealing Impressionist influences. Unlike numerous works by this artist which depict the dramatic action of war, he also painted a piece that was unusual in that it shows a peaceful scene of Turkish soldiers at rest by a stream in an almost idyllic landscape....
