Schwartze also established an international reputation, with countless exhibitions and commissions throughout Europe and the United States… Schwartze’s portraits of her friends and relatives were not commissioned, and thus reveal much more variety in the sitters’ poses and the taking of artistic liberties that could not be risked with paying clients.
