Along with Joachim Bandau, he was a co-founder of the Cologne-based artist group K-66. From 1966, he has been active as a freelance artist. In 1991, he started to create paraffin and wax works. In 1987, Bonato received a teaching assignment in the field of art and design at the Universität-Gesamthochschule Wuppertal.
